Sasano-Bori Carving Technique Live!

Advanced, Sculpture/Carving | 18 Oct, 2012

A crazy wood carving by the Sasano-Bori. Out of a two inch length of round wood, this expert carver appears to sculpt the shape of what appears to be a mouse!? That’s what I believe it to be anyway, I’ll let you judge for yourselves. Enjoy.

    1. gorgeous carving… Though you know, nothing irks me more than watching a really interesting great video, and having to listen to the grinding noise of a tripod being forced to move when it’s tightened down to far. There’s a little screw. Twist it JUST a little, and that “CREEEEK’ won’t show up in your videos any more.

    2. And this is the traditional techniques for carving authentic Japanese wooden dildos. These high quality handmade dildos were crafted in this fashion since the early Heian period(about 9th century). Master Masahiro, depicted here, is fifth generation sasano-bori craftsman.

    5. yeah its sharp but that is also a soft wood, i can tell, i do lots of bushcratft/carving with sharp convex edge knives. The effort is put in to take off big chunks, otherwise it would take him longer. I think he uses his whole body to be precise and make sure the cuts are clean. You can tell when he makes the feathers that the wood is fairly soft.

    6. Lots of practice, I started teaching myself wood carving for physical therapy 2ish years ago and so far I’ve cut myself at least once on every thing I’ve ever carved. I’m guessing I still have a few more years of carving before I stop slipping the blade.

    7. Ive been carving a long time, and if you are not cutting yourself, it simply means your not carving! Every baby spills milk at least once in their lives…. Ive cut my self a number of times… It should be a ritual to cut your self before you begin carving… Seriously though, always work at holding and cutting, especially when your whittling…. Done the ball and cage yet???

    8. I want to do the ball and cage, I had to take a break over winter because my wrists wanted to lock up on me.I’m working on an elephant right now. I have examples pictures of all the cool carvings the cage ball, the chain link, the heart with arrow etc… I want to get to them and I will. I just like realistic animals more. It’s good to know cutting myself isn’t so bad.

    10. Where can i get a blade like that? Or hell, any good knife will suffice. I’m self-taught and most of my gear is small scale, if anyone can recommend, or better yet give a link to site that sells some, it would be greatly appreciated.
