Drawing Realistic Hair

Beginner, Drawing, Intermediate, Pencil | 11 Oct, 2012

Armed with a 2H and a B pencil and an eraser, this artist guides you through the process of drawing life-like hair from outline right up to the finished drawing. He adds all the shading and tonal qualities within the outline then works the eraser into the pencil to create suggestions of highlights on hairs. An excellent video for beginners to learn from.

    1. @paulrica21 i know the feeling, although i’ve recently had a lot of success in imagining the shape of the skull as i’m drawing and how the hair is falling and curving around, knowing what it wants to do and the direction it’s taking so to speak.

    4. Hello: I send a previous message, but I see that the translation is not very good, if not understood what I wanted to ask, so I write back and see if I have more luck this time: I’ve been watching videos for hours draw hair and this was the best, congratulations. I wonder if you use pencils are graphite, as I have been using are very ugly shine in the dark parts. what brand do you use?? .. Elsewhere I see you use a pencil or mechanical pencil for very thin hair: how many of mine do you use??

    5. Was thinking the same thing… =P Watching closely, I think what he was referring to as a “lead pencil” is merely a mechanical pencil and he was referring to a traditional wood pencil as a “graphite pencil”. A technicality, true, but ALL pencils are made with graphite even though it’s called ‘lead’… Keep on drawing!

    6. Thank you so very much. I have been struggling with hair. I had no idea that you use an eraser to get the light areas. I’ve been trying to leave the white areas from the paper and draw through them lol You have just saved me a lot of headache 🙂

    7. Omg this helped so much. Thanks man. I asked my professor at CSUN how to draw hair and he literally said just draw EVERY HAIR. I was like what does that even meannnnnn!? lol I believe he told me the erasing concept, but he never taught me the blend concept and outlining and filling in part. Do you ever use charcoal or charcoal pencils to fill in areas? Thanks for the video it helped a lot.

    8. I love how you don’t try to push your style on others. Your technique is beautiful, but it isn’t quite me, you know? I will definitely be able to incorporate some of this technique with what I do already. I hadn’t thought of cutting and eraser like that. I have always used a kneaded eraser and am forever frustrated with the lack of precision. Thank you so much. I hope you do many more.
