Mark Crilley: Drawing A Landscape In Two Point Perspective

This excellent tutorial from Mark Crilley accurately demonstrates how to draw a two-point perspective landscape in pencil, based on a sci-fi theme, this tutorial will help all those looking to improve their drawing abilities and to gain a better understanding of perspective rules for futuristic and anime style works. Suitable for beginners and advanced artists alike. Mark covers how to properly set his horizontal line and vanishing points and highlights the problems with having perspective points too close together which is a common problem experienced by beginners. Don’t forget to check out his other works. Very well edited with time-lapse stages to help speed up sections.

Using a Pigma Micron pen, Mark ‘ink’s up’ his pencil sketch to reveal his final design, using a pencil to shade and add form to the drawing his finished work looks fantastic. Part of a 2 part series; Part 2 shows coloring of his design. Mark Crilley is very informative in all of his videos and I encourage those who like his work to purchase his book Miki Falls (view on

    1. @PrincessofKaresh The Death Star is pretty huge. I think it has gravity… well, EVERYTHING has gravity, but I reckon it has a pretty large gravitational pull. I doubt it had enough to have a multi-layered atmosphere, but whatever. Plus, we don’t really know about life on other planets. If other life IS out there, they could easily be built to survive in much cooler or hotter conditions.Anyway, the pool thing was obviously a joke. If you watch part 2, he doesn’t color is as a pool.

    2. hey mark. love your vids. would be awesome if you can reply comments about the drawings you make or make a question and answer video. i know i’m not the only one asking what this is for or that is for and whether “this” is supposed to be “that”.

    3. Hi 🙂 Your drawigs are awesome but I just want to say… this perspective is incorrect from the mathematical point of view 😛 Just wanted to say that cuz I know that if you’re an artist you don’t get mad about criticism instead you want to improve

    4. you’re welcome. its the only way i got better. use your pencil to measure things. and the same principles apply as here. the only only other thing you need is shading and value. if you cant make it to a forest then, use your resources like pictures from google. or rent a nature dvd and pause it, then try to draw it. its all about practice really.

    5. Thanks Mark. My suggestion is for you to do a drawing of a Japanese temple with detail and everything in 2 point perspective. I have a picture like that in my manga and I wanted to see how you do it to see if there are any little things I can fix on mine. Thanks 🙂

    7. I learnt perspective twice once in junior school and again in secondary school and it just never stuck but now, just from your 15 min videos, I feel like I can confidently bring my ruler out and apply perspective and structured backgrounds to my drawings. Thanks, you’re awesome ^_^

    8. Yeah, I know you can become good at art by yourself, but you can’t really take it further by just looking at books. I love art, but I’m only ‘good’ at art, I wanna be awesome and further my experience. However initially I wanna be a graphics designer making games.

    9. In some other 2-point perspective tutorials, they have the vanishing points outside or beyond the paper…so i was wondering, how does that affect the perspective? Does the out of paper points make the the perspective less magnified or something?? Or does it produce the same results as points within the paper? And how do people fit/get into perspective as well?

    13. Wow. I’m a completely beginner, and i couldn’t imagine that drawing buildings/objects like that (i mean – keeping perspective, adding detail etc.) can be as easy as you show it…Wow 🙂 I thought it’ll be muuuuch harder 🙂 Thanks.

    16. Clode perspective points is not a mistake. This is an impressive means.Mistake is a paralel vertical lines of a cube. They will be paralel if your horizon line dividing your view by 2 same partselse you’ll got a third perspective point outside the paper.

    17. That would be a 3 point perspective… This view is more grounded. It’s almost the same as a 1 point. So my question remains, how do you choose between 1 point and 2 point? I guess it depends on the position of the scenery….

    19. What is the difference between 1 point and 2 point perspective? I mean if you notice, the one point perspective is exactly like the two point, except one of the points is in your paper. You still need the other point outside to make something look right. Don’t you?

    20. The way that helps me is that 1 point- Everything is connected to 1 vanishing point like looking down a tunnel. 2 point is 2 vanishing points. looking at a building both sides of the buildings are lined up with the vanishing points….If my Japanese didn’t make sense just watch the videos LoL

    21. Can someone inform me of the specific paper Mark uses, if not Mark himself? Sketchbooks I’ve purchase from local art stores seem to bleed even with water color and that’s some of the ones that say water-color-friendly with exclamation marks! MARKS! Or it could be the water color, Crayola -_-. I can draw, but teaching myself to color? Whole new ball game, and backgrounds. Agh, are they exciting to learn.

    24. Hry Mr Crilly, I know you get a crap load of questions, but PLEASE just answer this ONE question. How do you figger out how to make stuff look futuristic. Like, how did you know to put all those extra lines that make that image look like a futuristic landscape.

    25. It’s a tutorial… If you want to see someone just doing art, go look up some speed painting videos. And while we’re at it. Learn to spell. Its talk, not tlk. And you, not U. The, not da. And wouldn’t, not wouldnt. You also ran on 2 sentences by making a statement and asking a question with no punctuation whatsoever between the two.

    26. Thanks for the all the point perspective videos. I realized that you keep mentioning to do the details last. When I draw a person, I usually finish the eyes, then go on. (habit.) Do you have any tips for me? I see the importance of doing it all evenly spread. Maybe I just have trouble envisioning it all off paper.
