How To Draw The Female Face

Using the tablet and pen which most digital artists are familiar with, this particular artist demonstrates how to draw the correct proportions of the adult female face. There is a very basic first few minutes where the artist draws the standard proportions if the face, ie, the eyes, ears, mouth and general head shape. This is then advanced onto a more detailed drawing to the right of it. The classic crosshatching technique is used to achieve the shading on areas of the face where tone is expected from hypothetical directional light. Have a watch and have a go, digital or just standard pencils. You might just be surprised with your own result.

    1. I liked watching this very much and will watch several more times, I’m sure. It’s fascinating to see how you work and the detail on the hair is awesome….almost more than the actual face (it seems), but then I see you add more detail to the face later. Great video. thank for sharing

    2. Wow, great tutorial! Recently, I’ve decided to put myself through the pain of learning to draw people . . . Why I feel the need to torture myself, I don’t know, but I’ve been enjoying learning different techniques! Also, it hit me about halfway through this what her face reminds me of. The old X-Men comic books, from the 80s and 90s, when the characters still looked realistic. It made me smile when I realized that!

    3. @a7776nice I am using Corel Painter to create my drawings, and Wacom pen tablet, and the process is the same as if drawing on paper. Making it digital is easier to create tutorials so others can follow along. I use the Conte brush to create a pencil like effect, and a blender brush to blend with, and I try to erase also when I re-do my lines and shading.

    5. I love the way you showed how to draw. I can draw but it took me a lot of time because I dont have basic training. Your tutorial way make the drawing become much easier. Thanks for the best directions.by the way, instrumental music is the best choice it make me more concentration.

    6. Interesting but most of us thought we would see a lesson demonstrating, drawing with pencils or graphite on paper. So I guess you should let us know what program/software your using and what settings? Why would you title the video “How to draw the female face” then neglect to mention how the female face differs from the male and which features to note?????

    7. Thanks for the comments. This is an older video and I’ll update the info in the description. I created this video on just drawing the female face, and I also created a separate video on how to draw the male face – each has it’s own basic tips. Since you brought some good points, I will create more advanced videos demonstrating both male and female versions of drawing. I used Corel Painter, with Conte brush, Eraser, and Grainy Water Blender.

    8. When you have crafted up your mind to begin a campaign in network promotion, you have to take into consideration what kind of compensation package deal you, as well as the people that you are working with, might get. It really is key to know the compensation you should expect just before you enter into any agreement so that you do not waste your time and energy with an organization which has minor to provide.

    10. You’ve a lot of potential as a professional artist. Here’s a tip. On a real human eye, there will be a bit of shading under the eyelid, and close to the edges, forming an oval shape. Blending it makes for a realistic effect. Keep up the good work!Stella from London

    11. Hi Stella, thank you for the tip. This particular video is not so much detailed as my other ones are. On this one, I am aiming for the basic structure and form of the female face. I have a detailed eye video on my channel. Thank you for commenting and watching. Cheers! 🙂

    12. Yes, I use a computer to create my digital paintings. Look on my site for more examples – a computer didn’t create these – a human using software as a tool did. Same as using any other art medium. I also draw by hand with pencils, paint with oils, airbrush, draw with pen and ink. Here is a link to some of my other works. Oh, and thanks for watching. Have a good one. jsolorzanoarts com

    13. You still hold & use the stylus of a graphics tablet the same way you do a pencil. How much pressure you apply still determines how dark the line is the same as a pencil. The shapes and lines come from the person holding the stylus, not the computer software. For you to then say the uploader isn’t an artist is an insult to his/ her obvious talent.

    14. So the only art has to be on paper or canvas in your world? Art comes in hundreds of forms, one of which yes is been digital. But how is this any different to paper? Think about it – by his stroke movements it seems that he draws with a graphics tablet. And that works through using a pen on a flat tablet plugged into the computer – exactly like pencil on paper, the only difference is the strokes come up on screen. The technique is just about exactly the same at it’s core. How is it not art?

    15. yeah, if not harder O.o since it’s unnatural for the brain to be processing not looking down at the paper/pen while drawing, instead looking in a different place for the pen. For many people drawing using a tablet takes a lot of practice because of this.

    16. Dude! Just cuz he isn’t using a pencil doesn’t mean he isn’t an artist. It takes talent to draw realisticly on a computer. And pretty much, like he replied to you, he’s using software as a tool like a traditional artist would’ve used a pencil.

    17. @FireMaster12100ohh man “a comment with no logic”. How can you say that? Computer do not have any anatomical knowledge. Even Game designers use computers to develop 3d games but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t artists coz computer just provides an interface to artists and artists have to do all the work (And they do a lot of hard work to give their best.. trust me, I am a 3d artist) manually.@JSolorzanoArts1Great skills man….Liked 🙂

    20. Actually, I think drawing on a computer with appropriate tools is easier than not on a computer, you can do whatever you want, and erase as many time as you want, using things like photoshop or other software gives you means that you don’t have when you’re in front of your paper… And for painting, computer is very usefull when you don’t want to fail you’re drawing… But it’s my own opinion.

    22. 5 eyes across is a general guideline. Not everyone will have perfect proportions, One way to observe this is to take photos of a few of your friends head-on (no relatives), and compare the distances of their eyes, noses, lips, etc. Drawing a variety of different faces will help improve your drawings.

    23. Not at all realistic, for a realistic portrait I would go further with more blendings to achieve an almost photographic effect. This is simply to demonstrate how to divide the face with guides and how to look at light and shadows on the planes of the face.

    24. Amazing job, man! Aside from the finished product, I like how you kept the rough outline of the face on the left the entire time. As of right now the left image is about as detailed as I can get in a drawing, but after watching the video and seeing how you went about drawing the “ghost image” to adding the finishing touches to the final product, it’s inspiring. With practice (and frequent reference to this video), I’m confident I’ll be able to draw just as well. Thanks for the video!

    29. You are an amazing teacher. I’ve wanted to start drawing manga, and people have been telling me to learn how to draw proportions and anatomy first, and I have to say you have helped me out a bunch. Now that I have mastered the female face, i can move onto the male, and finally practice drawing manga. I’m going to impress some people on school 😀

    30. The right side of the nose will usually be in shadow, but not fully as there is reflected light bouncing off her right cheek bone back onto the nose. If the light source is far away the shaded sides will always have some kind of reflected light, but if its a harsh light, like right next to her face, it will have a strong contrast. The best way to observe this is to look at glamour photographs and examine the light and shadow areas.

    31. Hatching is just one of many techniques to use when shading, and this video was designed to only show the hatching method to shade. This drawing can be taken to a more finished drawing with more shading added to hide the hatching marks.

    32. Too big eyes and nose, neck is too thin, the extreme lines of both sides of nose can not exceed the intern corner of the eye. Eyebrows are supposed to start at the same point (or even before) the line of the eyes starts (in the middle face). Not proper shadow at the forehead (just in the left you should make it because the light is comming from the left). Try choosing POLICLETO for support.

    33. Now, I find that as a male, I tend to draw other male figures because I know the figure right (my guess), now would you find the same to be true? Or do you feel comfortable with both sex that you draw whatever comes to mind?

    35. Your technique is really amazing, but shouldn’t some parts of the face be smaller? Especially eyes.. It’s just my opinion! However, this drawing is so brilliant.. I would prefer to see it as a comics character, not a realistic portrait.. 🙂

But it’s got some po- nope, this is aweful… No, wait… Screw it, I’m fast forwarding.” Then I saw the hair and I thought, “Holy smoke!!!!” I had to go back and make sure it was the same picture. XD Reminds me of the Spidey comics I grew up with and the cool female characters with their soft expressions and hard features. She looks so strong and kind.

    38. Ouch! Well for me, I went from drawing realistic people.. then when I got into anime I started drawing that and after several years of not doing realistic art anymore (just anime) I completely forgot how to do realistic work! LOL So as you can see, it’s a totally different mind-set. With anime you just do slits for noses, mouths and LARGE eyes for females. My 2 cents would be to focus on detail of the face. Smaller eyes doesn’t mean masculine, an actual nose doesn’t mean masculine too. 😛 lol!

    41. I understand that mouses are hard to control, I just imagine the computer makes certain things easier, such as using the correct pressure, weight and angle of pencil as well as type and shade. You also have the option to ‘Undo’ your mistakes and cleanly erase unwanted guidelines as if they were never there. He also is able to simply change the size of his utensil from the finest point to the largest eraser. Not to mention the ability to duplicate and refine your work.

    43. You got excellent visual skills and your perception of how the female face should look, is very interesting. I was doing something similar to yours but using a grid and then, using mathematical precision, to get the exact portrait that shows realism and also by breaking down and then, building up to get all the details and the shading the right way. I like the fact that you were committed to executing the facial structure including the hair, flawlessly.

    45. It’s always fascinating to watch such transformations. Really good tutorial, most likely applicable for “real” paper sketching (with the exception of some manipulations with e-rubber “undo’s”). Certainly, I often met approach to mark the eyes first of all, but if this method also works, i’m not going to cavil at. Good luck
