Mark Crilley: How To Draw A Manga Eye On A Young Female, Line By Line
Manga and anime artist Mark Crilley guides you through this ‘how to draw a manga eye on a female’ art tutorial. The young female’s head and facial features have already been drawn with a black prismacolor pencil all apart from one eye and this is going to be the emphasis of this art and illustrative video tutorial.
Mark Crilley narrates over the top of the video and the start of the video opens with him explaining how to draw the manga female’s eye right before zooming in to the area of interest and beginning his pencil drawing.
Drawing the iris is the first part to be covered and it is formed into an almost crescent shape with a flat line at the top to suggest the eyelid. This eyelid is then extended to form the general shape of the upper eye and is then heavily shaded in the same black pencil crayon to suggest mascara and create a more feminine look as opposed to a masculine eye. As with nearly all eyes there will be highlights and reflections to take into account so Crilley exaggerates this with it being a manga illustration by creating two heavily outlined circles in different sizes to create the illusion of the glass like lens of the eye.
When drawing eyes whether is be illustrative, detailed or in this case anime and manga it is still vitally important to pick out as many details as possible, so here Mark Crilley has emphasised the outer ring of the iris by applying darker tonal values to it but with the clever use of his black artists pencil he has also drawn tiny flicks to imitate the complexities of the inner eye.
Further pencil shading to the inner eye and the darkening of the pupil and the edge of the highlights finally bring this pencil drawing demonstration to a close and as I’m sure you will agree the quality of the drawing and the professionalism of the narrative is difficult to fault.
