How To Create A Contemporary Gestural Painting On A Large Scale

This artist goes by the name of Vera and she has created this video to show you the link betweenconsciousandsubconscious when applying your entire body to a painting. She uses her hands, brushes, arms and even paint straight from the tube, there really are no boundaries.

Where you place your hands and the actions you take are all coming from somewhere, but where? The color palette you select and the way you choose to apply them whether it be quick strokes, dabs or massive area coverage, all these decisions must come from your mind and your mind only. So this video I feel is very inspiring and well worth a watch and hopefully allow you to reveal your inner artist and allow you to portray yourself direct to the canvas…Or any other surface of your choice. Happy painting.

    2. So many haters out there! Notice how the only people being critical are the ones who probably spent way too much money on college and then an art grad program. I thought art was in the eyes of the beholder? If someone can connect to a piece of art, who are you to tell that person that it’s not? The definition of technique: is a procedure used to accomplish a specific activity or task. If smearing paint on a canvas with her hands is her technique…then it’s her technique. Stop hating!

    3. If you take a look at today’s art or the art from the 1950’s to now so much money is spent on work like this, other than work that takes a lot of time and effort for someone to do such as a nice realistic paintings. And about art school, you can’t make art if you don’t know anything about it. Even abstract artist like Picasso had a method of meaning to what he did, and you learn that In ART SCHOOL.

    5. You cannot be more correct. I am new to the art world, only 1 year but I have found that “artists” are the most pompous, haters around. I am a 4th year medical student living in Manhattan. Never took a single art class but just had my first solo exhibition last week, now that really upset all the art majors and struggling artists.

    6. Ok, its pleasing to look at. But taking some grandiose meaning from it is just stupid. Its the kind of thing that the art world is full of – snobbery. Throwing together a painting in less than ten minutes can’t have given that artist any joy or pride. Giving it some high falutin concept is a cynical exercise in raising the price of the picture…

    7. This is crap. As an abstract artist myself, I realize that it’s all in the eye of the beholder, but let’s get real. Merely throwing globs of paint on a canvas does not necessarily make one an artist; nor does it make for a good painting.

    8. Without making critical comments about the piece itself, painting with your hands with either acrylic or oils…especially oils!…on a rough canvas surface is exposing yourself to unnecessary toxicity. You are rubbing the pigments in to your skin and some of them, especially the yellows and reds, can have cadmium in them. I wouldn’t paint like this over the long term. Interesting exercise to loosen yourself up though.

    9. abstract is a simplification and summary of a concrete thing. example: “what you said was too abstract, can you give a specific example?”, “abstract of a scientific paper is a summary” So if a reasonable person can not tell what an abstract painting is portraying, then is it really appropriate to call it an abstract painting? All art is already abstract anyway, art is never a straight 100% copy of real life. So why waste time by making a separate category called abstract art??

    10. Mate, if you can’t accept the artist’s explanation for their work, then why not just accept it for what it is and take from it something positive ~ you like the texture, the use of colour etc. People like you really crack me up 🙂

    12. For all you people that are poorly judging his work, just remember that everyone’s art style is different and for the guy who said throwing paint on a canvas wasn’t abstract, sure it is because his painting wasn’t something direct

    13. abstract takes no skill and no talent….but it does take a lot of emotions, i dont like abstract for talent, i like it cuz i see how other people think and express things. if u think anybody can do it, why dont you do it?

    14. According to the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, art is defined as “any aesthetic expression, on paper, in fim, or song, that is meant to make people enlightened and happy, as well as carrying educational and patriotic value”. Any form of “art”, such as abstract art, does not positively influence people, and even drives people into insanity, is considered subversive and counterrevolutionary. Such forms of art, and their artists, must NOT be allowed to exist. PERIOD

    15. I dont understand how people can not see the beauty in this piece of art…i think its beautifulit evokes so much feel and emotion, not everyone can scribble some paint on a canvas and call it art. Just saying 🙂 i think this is brilliant

    16. Oh kill me. If I did this it would look like a 3 year old slapped some paint on a piece of notebook paper. Such beauty and perfection in every direction of flow in the paint. and she seems to have done it with such ease. 🙁 great job though (:

    20. abstract art is crap , this is utter rubbish, as a professional artist for over 30 yrs l would be horrified if any of my students churned out this garbage. We did dupe some art critic once with stuff like this but my students painted blindfolded to prove my point that it s all rubbish and these so called abstract artists could nt paint a landscape to save their lives. All my students could paint this but l don t think that she could paint like my students . It does make me laugh though

    21. Everytime i am depress i come here to laugh at this pretentious hack trying to find meaning in their splash canvas of clown vomit. It does not take much to throw colors onto a piece of canvas and call it art.Mediocrity at its best folks! I am sorry i take that back , they have yet to achieve mediocrity.

    22. Apparently you have deluded yourself into thinking throwing a bunch of colors at a piece of paper is equalivent to rocket science. Not only is the result a huge mess and has no form of anything what so ever. Anyone could do it if they have enough cash to waste buying a canvas and buckets of paint. Like picasso , this form of “art” is overated and lazy. please stop trying to find meaning in something that is devoid of it in the first place.
