Adam Johnston – Pencil Illusion!

Advanced, Drawing, Intermediate, Pencil | 10 Sep, 2012

With his clever use of shading and heavy tones, Artist Adam Johnston makes this pencil drawing appear to come out of the paper. As your abilities within pencil drawing develop it is easier to achieve depth whereas if you are still a bit timid with tones then a drawing is more likely to come out a tad 2D. A nice little inspirational video of what can hope to be achieved with practice.

    1. @travman305 You can learn…but for some it’s easier some it’s harder. Like when I was super little I could draw pretty damn good, and no one thought me. But I gained experience so I’m much better. Also my dad Is amazing at drawing and so is my mom so it can also be a heritage thing. Just keep trying 🙂

    4. great drawing and tracing skills! at first i could barely see the lines and i thought,”woow he’s a grat artist!” then i looked closer because i knew there was no way to draw that good on the spot without messing up. so i looked closer and saw the lines.

    7. Um. I thought that messing around on Youtube would make me feel better about my boyfriend telling me that he still loves his ex but not breaking up with me. But the song is so sad. And the image captures how I feel perfectly: trapped. Great drawing though.

    8. Those aren’t “tracing marks”. It’s from where he drew it very lightly at the beginning so he could correct any mistakes. What you see from the beginning of the video is him darkening the lines of the picture he already drew. 🙂

    9. Unfortunately I couldn’t appreciate the drawing because even though it’s very, very good, the song is an abomination and ruins everything. How can someone this talented have such a bad taste in “music”? Sounds like something a 15 year old with glitter high heels would listen to… Anyway, I don’t get it…

    10. Even if you trace from an original picture, rendering light and shade in a drawing is the most difficult part, because you have to learn the anatomy of the face, where the light and shade falls on a rounded muscle. Try drawing and shading a ball or a marble and see if you can make it round using a pencil. Chances are, if you’re not an experienced artist, you’ll just render it like in a coloring book – flat, and no 3D like illusion. Always remember that the secret in drawing is in light and shade

    12. the illusion part comes in when u hang it on ur wall. it must be the same color of the paper (if u like because it will look really like an illusion if it has the same color base). then people will notice that your neighbor just tore your wall and go peeking at all the things u do . that’s it 🙂

    14. wow, you must be stupid. “The only thing he added was shading” THAT’S THE POINT! Do you know how hard it is to get perfect shading right???? VERY. And tracing is hard, too. He drew the whole picture and added shading. Not only is it hard to shade, but draw a real person…. that actually LOOKS real.

    16. I didn’t know THAT song is called my immortal! I have known it for YEARS, and I didn’t know it was called my immortal. I have heard the name and people ask: “Hey, did you hear that song ‘My Immortal’ ?” I always said, “I’ve never heard the song before!”

    17. Well no shit you can see the outlines. He sketched it out lightly before he put in the details. When you record yourself drawing, any smart person would have a base outline before adding in details. And besides, the illusion is made with the shading not the lines, dip shit. Go back to elementary art.

    21. He probably drew the outlines himself but even if he didn’t he’s still in the top 0.1% talent-wise for filling it in, do you really think you could make it look like that with just an outline?! You think the only thing there is to drawn art is the outline? :S

    22. Adam got his inspiration from me, JD Hillberry. This is a copy of a self portrait I did over 20 years ago. Please visit my channel if you want to see more of my work, and let your teacher know that I have a drawing technique book available that explains my techniques.

    23. that ‘trace thing’ is a sketch, if you actually knew the first thing about drawing you should’ve known that. zzz P.S. no artist who says they’re awesome is actually awesome. the minute they are satisfied with their art, is the moment they stop growing.

The coin design drawing that receives the most votes will have their design minted on thousands of actual copper coins and receive a prize. Video is here: /watch?v=oLxtTi-oKK8

    25. Because he did a light sketch before hand so he’d be able to follow it and do it quicker for the video…Quit trying to make people seem like fakes. -___-Plus,even if that was some cheat outline, you can’t fake that shading c:

    26. He’s not tracing it. The lines from the beginning are just there so that he doesn’t mess up. If you draw dark lines, they are difficult to erase and one bad line can ruin the picture. Artists do a light sketch before they go over it and make it look more detailed.

    27. Wow that is amazing!!! 🙂 how can people think its traced, i’m not an artist (well maybe a food artist lol……….i’m a chef) but it’s obvious why you do the faint lines first. Some people are just so thick!! That drawing is absolutely brilliant, i wish i had a talent like that.

    28. It’s not called tracing… you draw out the basic shapes and locations with thin lines then you go over them and add the shading and details. It’s really difficult to just draw it perfectly in proportion without any references or guides.

    30. Frightening indeed! Yet those who dare to chlaelnge the status quo, who push into new world’s of thinking and business strategy are often the most criticized and brutalized for daring to be different.Oh and by the way, the ramifications go far beyond what we can even imagine just watching this clip and thinking about how that applies to our daily business and personal lives. There are really eternal things at stake here. Not to sound apocalyptic, but the Bible speaks to much of this from Genesis to Revelations.
